The crème de la crème of English expression
I often read english articles and found some treasure in them, here is a non-exhausive list:
- the cat’s pyjamas: something outstanding, excellent, or highly admired
- under the hood: in its internal workings
- top notch: the highest quality
- wishy-washy: lacking in commitment
- you can’t have your cake and eat it too!: enjoy two desirable but mutually exclusive things at the same time
- cut your teeth on: to gain early experience
- the lion’s share: the largest or best portion of something
- the fat is in the fire: trouble will happen soon
- in lieu of: instead of
- under the weather: feeling sick or unwell
- hearing crickets: complete silence or no response
- the final nail in the coffin: the last event or action that causes the failure of something that was already in decline or doomed
- fell of my plate: having forgotten to do one of many things that you were supposed to do
- the oldest trick in the book: a way of tricking someone that is still effective although it has been used a lot
- nothing new under the sun: every new idea has some sort of precedent or echo from the past
- cut from the same cloth: very similar
- the bee’s knees: something or someone excellent
